This index includes books that have been decorated by a scribe or artist with the following enhancements:
Initials supplied in manuscript
Including historiated initials/initials with identifiable portraits (also might include elaborately decorated/painted/illuminated initials)
Be.1.2, 3: on [c1r] (leaf [9r]) of part I a 16-line historiated initial “M” - depicting St. Jerome in cardinal’s robes and hat, an open book in his hands; on [b1r] (leaf [13r]) of part II a 22-line historiated initial “P” - depicting St Jerome as a hermit in the wilderness, kneeling and beating his chest in penance, with his lion at his knee
Be.3.17: six-line historiated initial “U” on [*2r] depicting a seated physician in a pink robe and cap holding aloft a urine flask.
Bf.1.18: five-line historiated initial “P” and nine-line initial “C” (in error for “B”) on a1r depicting saints.
Bf.3.2: eight six-line initials, which introduce separate books of the text, are supplied in gold on a purple or blue square ground decorated with triple white dots, and are further decorated with floral motifs or vignettes - including a hare, a duck, and a putto astride a swan
Bg.1.6: six-line historiated initial “Q” , set on a gold square ground and framing a portrait of Guilelmus Duranti holding a book.
Bg.1.9: classical figure of semi-draped man holding a bunch of grapes and making a libation of wine onto a flame.
Bg.2.12: six-line initial “V” supplied in dull gold on [a1r] with a background of two dolphins and a female head in profile; eight other historiated initials supplied in pen-and-ink and heightened with wash.
Bg.3.10: six-line epigraphic initial “Q” is supplied in purple pen-work, the bowl of the initial decorated with the head and shoulders of a helmeted man holding a spear; on b1r a ten-line epigraphic initial “C” is supplied in purple pen-work, and astride the initial is a horse standing on grassy ground and bearing a nude male rider who holds a banner with the initials “S.P.Q.R.”
