| Binding: | Germany, 16th-century blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards; covers decorated with intersecting fillets to form an outer frame and a centre panel. On the front cover the centre panel is divided by fillets into lozenge and triangular-shaped compartments which are decorated with three separate stamps - a lozenge-shaped stamp of a heart pierced by an arrow, a lozenge-shaped stamp of an eagle, and a small floral stamp - and the frame is decorated with a repeated floral scroll. On the rear cover the centre panel is decorated with the same three stamps, but the frame is decorated with repeated large rosette stamps. Spine compartments decorated with the lozenge-shaped eagle stamp and the small floral stamp as described above; three paper labels affixed to spine - one with title in ink, the second with imprint details, the third with a classmark in ink in the form of the letter ‘C’. Two chased brass clasps, with chased catch plates on front board; evidence from nails and nail holes of five bosses on each board and protective strips at outer corners - all now lost. Red, green and white headbands; top edge of text block stained green; parchment manuscript spine liners partially visible; title written in ink across fore-edge ‘Thomae de Argentina super 4o Libr. S[e]n[ten]iar[um]’; four leather tabs separate the four books of the text; 19th-century(?) paper pastedowns (originals not preserved). Size: 298 x 210 mm. |

On b1r a nine-line initial “D” is supplied in shades of blue and white to represent foliage - the initial infilled with gold and set on a square ground of vertical stripes in red, purple, brown and greenish yellow; on the same page the two columns of text are separated by what appears to be a blue pole, at the top of which is a banner(?) overlapping the printed heading Prologus, and at the bottom of which is foliage tied in a bow; similarly decorated initials supplied on A1r, aa2r, and AA1r; other initials supplied throughout in red or in red and reserved white, often with flourishes; paragraph marks supplied in red throughout; chapter headings and running headings highlighted in red. |
