Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge ... 7th day of February, 1870 ...' [London:  1870];  sold for £0.6.6 to the bookseller, Thomas Arthur, according to the digitized Bodleian copy of the sale catalogue (http://dbooks.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/books/PDFs/590275292.pdf, accessed Feb. 2019).

William Euing (1788-1874), insurance broker, Glasgow:  purchased from Arthur 2 May 1870 according to Euing’s pencil acquisition note with price code on a1r “2 5 70 ad/ Arthur” together with his inventory number “No  4792”;  acquisition details confirmed in Euing’s acquisitions inventory (University of Glasgow Library, MS Euing 49).

Binding: Scotland, 19th-century dark green calf decorated with a double blind fillet, a small fleuron at each corner;  top edge gilt;  marbled endpapers;  binder’s ticket on verso of front free endpaper “J. Carss & Co., Bookbinders, 31, Argyll Street, Glasgow.”   Size:  211 x 151 mm.
Leaf size: 206 x 143 mm.
Annotations: 19th-century pencil numbering on a1v “105/3” and pencil note “Aug 29/72 3/6” on rear free endpaper probably both relate to the Carss binding.
Decoration: Initials, capital strokes, paragraph marks supplied in red throughout.
