Provenance: François Bonivard (1493-1570), Swiss patriot and historian:  inscription on 1/1r “Franciscus Boniuardus” and on 14/7v (f. 122v) “Boniuardi sum ex hereditate patruj”;  on lower margin of 1/3r Bonivard’s painted coat of arms:  argent, a cross sable charged with five shells argent - above which, at the left hand side, a mitre, and at the right hand side, the crook of a crosier.
William Hunter (1718-1783), physician and anatomist:  source unknown.
University of Glasgow:  Hunterian bequest 1807;  Hunterian Museum bookplate, with former shelfmark “At.1.6”.
Binding: 18th-century gold-tooled red goatskin.   On both covers two ornamental rolls form a frame;  gold-tooled spine, edges and turn-ins;  gilt-edged leaves underlaid with marbling;  marbled endpapers;  green silk bookmark;  rear flyleaf has a bunch of grapes watermark.   Size:  315 x 224 mm.
Leaf size: 309 x 213 mm.
Annotations: Several lines on 1/1r referring to passages in the text in the hand of the early owner, François Bonivard;  a few marginal annotations in the same hand, some of which have been deliberately erased and some cropped by binder;  occasional “nota” marks;  vestiges of early signatures visible;  an 18th-century shelfmark in pencil on the front flyleaf “LV.B.9”.
Decoration: Painted coat of arms on the lower margin of 1/3r - see Provenance - surrounded on both sides by elaborate floral decoration in red, blue, purple, green and silver (now oxidized);  on 1/3r a seven-line initial “V” supplied in blue on a square ground containing an elaborate foliate design in red, blue and yellow which extends into inner and top margins;  initials supplied in red or blue throughout (most with guide letters still evident);  paragraph marks supplied in red throughout the body of the text (red or blue in the “Rubricae”).
Imperfections: Wanting the final blank leaf.
