Provenance: Joseph Smith (1673/4?-1770), British Consul in Venice:  lot 1813 in 'Bibliotheca Smithiana: a catalogue of the curious, elegant, and very valuable library of Joseph Smith ... Which will be sold by auction, by S. Baker and G. Leigh ... on Monday, January the 25th, 1773'.
William Hunter (1718-1783), physician and anatomist:  purchased by Hunter at the Smith sale for £2.4.0 according to the annotated BL copy of the Smith sale catalogue - shelfmark S.C.S. 8(7).
University of Glasgow:  Hunterian bequest, 1807;  Hunterian Museum bookplate on front pastedown, with former shelfmark “O.3.7”;  the Hunterian bookplate has been pasted over an earlier bookplate - probably that of Joseph Smith.
Binding: Italy, 18th-century parchment with fore-edge cover extensions, red leather title labels;  blank parchment flyleaf bound in before a1 with slight offsetting from the marginal decoration on a1r.   Size:  293 x 205 mm.
Leaf size: 284 x 197 mm.
Annotations: Occasional marginal annotations in Latin in an early hand;  occasional “nota” marks and manicules;  loosely inserted in the book is a torn fragment of paper (probably used as a bookmark) on which is written, in Italian, a reference to the convent of St. Catherine at Pisa, with the date 1563.
Decoration: On a1r a twelve-line historiated initial ‘Q’ is supplied in crimson, blue and green and is set on a square gold ground with the figure of Aquinas portrayed within the frame of the letter (the saint with a gilt halo and dressed in black and white robes holds a blue-bound book);  floral and foliate decoration in crimson, blue and green, embellished with gold discs and hair-line pen-work, extends into the inner margin;  other initials and paragraph marks supplied in alternate red and blue (the latter often with reserved white);  a few of the printed 'questio' running headings are enclosed within a hand-drawn brown ink scroll.  See N.R.
