| Binding: | South Germany, 16th-century blind-tooled calf; see J.B. Oldham, Notes on bindings in the Hunterian and general libraries in Glasgow University (1938), p. 6bis. The front cover has at its centre a fleur-de-lys and Rautengerank panel stamp (69 × 47 mm); the rectangle bordering the panel is stamped with two separate small tools - a six-petalled flower and a lozenge-shaped tool containing a lion rampant; the rest of the cover is decorated with frames formed by fillets and a roll depicting a staff entwined with foliage. The rear cover is similarly decorated. Rebacked in the 20th century and given new endpapers (originals not preserved); evidence of two fore-edge clasps (both lost). Size: 290 × 220 mm. |

| Annotations: | Very occasional marginal annotations in 16th-century hands; very occasional underlining; inscription on 4/8v (accompanied by a pen-and-ink drawing) regarding the sighting of a comet in August 1531 (i.e. Halley’s comet) “Visa fuit cometa inter septe[n]trione[m] [et] occidente[m] [...] c[ir]c[a] festu[m] assu[m]ptionis b[eatae] v[ir]g[in]is vltra tres ebdomadas anno d[omi]ni 1531 ...”; quotation or motto on a1r “Si Christum discis satis est si caetera nescis: Si Christum nescis ['satis' - scored through] nihil est quod caetera discis”, above which in a different hand are the initials “B N S O”; unread early ownership inscription at top edge of a1r; "list n.306” in pencil in a 19th-century hand on a1r. |
