Provenance: William Hunter (1718-1783), physician and anatomist:  source unknown.
University of Glasgow:  Hunterian bequest 1807;  Hunterian Museum bookplate and book label on front pastedown, with former shelfmark “N.1.9”.
Binding: France(?), 18th-century gold-tooled mottled calf;  covers decorated with a dentelle border;  gold-tooled spine lettered (erroneously) ‘OMELIÆ || GREGORII || PAPÆ’ but dated (correctly) ‘PARIS || 1475’;  marbled endpapers;  flyleaves show partial watermark of an armorial shield with a fleur-de-lys above and the letters "L V G" below;  gilt-edged leaves;  green silk bookmark.   Size:  297 x 215 mm.
Leaf size: 290 x 208 mm  (but turned-over lower corner of 5/4 (f. 44) reveals that the leaf measurement was at least 293 x 212 mm before cropping).
Annotations: Frequent marginal annotations in 16th and 17th-century hands;  frequent ‘nota’ marks, underlining and manicules;  traces of early signatures in top outer corners of 2/4r (f. 14r) and 4/3r (f. 33r); erroneously paginated ‘1-257’ (p. 222 skipped) in an 18th-century hand from 1/10r-14/11v (ff. 10r-137v;  first front flyleaf has a letter ‘C’ in ink at top outer corner, and a date(?) and code in pencil at top inner corner ‘... 10/6 71 Uu/’.
Decoration: Six-line initial “S” on 1/10r supplied in blue and red;  other initials supplied throughout mainly in red (occasionally in blue);  paragraph marks in red;  running book numbers and chapter numbers supplied in red on rectos.
Imperfections: Wanting the first and final blank leaves, and the final quire 15 containing the Registrum.
