Provenance: Bonaventura Schmaus (early 17th century), Franciscan in Bamberg, Bavaria:  inscription on front pastedown “Frater Bonauentura Schma[us] ordinis Sancti Francisci de obseruantia ad usum Fratrum et Patrum comparauit et reliquit anno à partu virginis 1624 decimoseptimo Aprilis” and on rear free endpaper, in same hand, “Frater Bonauentura Schmaus ordinis S. Francisci de obseruantia in Bamberg”.

Binding: Germany, 16th-century blind-tooled pigskin (later varnished) over partially bevelled wooden boards.  The design of the front cover consists of a centre panel of the Crucifixion with the legend ‘ECCE AGNVS DEI QVI TOLLIT PECCATA MVNDI’ surrounded by four frames;  the innermost frame is a roll of named medallion heads (depicting Luther ‘MARTINVS LVT’, Melancthon ‘PHILIPP MELA’, and Huss ‘IOANNES HVS’);  the second frame is a roll depicting Biblical characters with legends ‘ECCE ANGNVS DE’, ‘DATA EST MIHI OM’, ‘DE FRVCTV VENT’, and ‘APPARVIT BENIG’;  the third frame is a foliate roll, and the outermost frame is a roll of unnamed heads within wreaths.  The rear cover has a similar design using the same four rolls but with a centre panel of the Resurrection with the legend ‘MORS VBI EST TVVS ACVLEVS VBI VICTOREM TVA INFERNE’.  Remains of two brass clasps with catch plates on front board;  spine undecorated;  remains of later title labels;  lightly sprinkled red-edged leaves.  Size: 408 × 285 mm.

Annotations: Very occasional marginal annotations in 16th-century hands;  occasional underlining in brown or red ink;  early running book numbers “1” to “8” in the centre of the upper margin of every page;  heavily deleted provenance(?) inscription on front free endpaper beginning “Fr:”;  19th-century pencil number “1/101” on front pastedown;  price code in ink on rear pastedown "bn/”.
Decoration: On 2/1r (f. 3r) a ten-line initial ‘Q’ in two shades of purple (the body of the letter infilled with black with grey tracery, is set on a square ground of yellow and green) from which long leafy stems in purple, green and yellow extend into the inner margin.  Similary decorated large initials in a wide range of colours are supplied at the beginning of each of the eight books of the text;  smaller initials supplied in red or blue;  capital strokes and paragraph marks supplied in red.
Imperfections: Wanting quire 1 (Table of contents).
