| Decoration: | On a2r, col. 1, an eight-line initial ‘I’ is supplied in pink on a rectangular ground of blue with a gold border edged in black, with green foliage and floral decoration in gold, blue, pink and purple extending into the inner margin; in the outer margin of the same page is a vertical gold and blue bar entwined with green, pink and purple foliage and similar floral decoration; the margin between the two columns on the same page is decorated in a similar style; in the lower margin are two putti standing on grass and holding a blue shield (the yellow oval-shaped object on the shield unidentified) and also holding a banderole on which is written ‘Frater Ioseph Cast.s Ordinis. Min Obs.’ The decoration on a2r has been identified by Professor Lilian Armstrong as the work of the Pico Master (his name derived from a manuscript of Pliny which he illuminated in 1481 for Giovanni Pico della Mirandola); see Lilian Armstrong, ‘The Pico Master: a Venetian miniaturist of the late Quattrocento’ in her Studies of Renaissance miniaturists in Venice, I (London: 2003) p. 323, no. 57, and N.R. Thorp, The glory of the page (London: 1987), no. 104. Other initials and paragraph marks are supplied in alternate red and blue throughout. |
