(d. 1483), Bishop of Città di Castello from 1460-1475, afterwards of Massa Marittima:  inscription on 22/7v (f. 219v) “Ego [frater (partially erased)] humilis [Jo: Episcopus (partially erased)] Castellanus et S[anctissi]mi d[omi]nj nostri d[omi]ni pauli pape secu[n]di Sac[ri]sta et Confessor vobis p[ri]ori et fr[atr]ibus conue[n]tus S[anc]ti [Augustini (partially erased)] de obs[er]ua[n]tia eiusdem Ciuitat[is] pro remedio Anime mee, dono vobis hu[n]c librum Lactantij e[m]ptum a me ex emolume[n]t[is] officior[um] meor[um]. Anno d[omi]nj Mo. cccco. Lxx. die xiia Augusti orate pro me” followed, in a different hand, by “S[anc]ti Aug[ustin]i Ciui[ta]t[is] Castelli”;  on 1/2r a partially erased inscription (under ultraviolet light) “Iste lib[er] e[st] [con]ue[ntus] s[ancti Aug[ustini] ciuitat[is] [caste]lli”.

Binding: 18th/19th-century sheep (undecorated), rebacked in 20th century;  paste-paper endpapers;  sprinkled red-edged leaves;  green silk bookmark;  front flyleaf has watermark of a fleur-de-lys within a circle with the letters “P P” below and a single letter “P” above the circle.   Size:  335 x 230 mm. 
Leaf size: 325 x 221 mm. 
Annotations: Occasional marginal annotations in a 16th-century hand (some partially erased);  running book numbers in a 16th-century hand;  inscription in a 17th-century hand on 2/1r (f. 13r) “Lactantius Iste est ex B”;  19th-century price “5: 5: 0” faintly written in pencil on verso of front free endpaper, and annotation in ink “C. Collat. Complet”. 
Decoration: On 2/1r (f. 13r) a six-line initial “M” is supplied in gold on a square ground of white-vine decoration defined in crimson, blue and green, which extends into the four margins to form a border;  the lower border of the same page incorporates a green laurel wreath within which is a defaced coat of arms (below the decorative border is a partially erased inscription in Italian in a 17th-century(?) hand “[...] aquila coronata da vna p[ar]te, e dall’ altra dei lione [...]” - perhaps a reference to the defaced stemma);  similar initials supplied in gold on white-vine grounds at the beginning of each book;  smaller initials supplied in alternate red and blue;  paragraph marks supplied in alternate red and blue in quire 1 (containing the rubrics and errata);  paragraph marks supplied in alternate red and blue at the beginning of each chapter. 
Imperfections: Wanting the blank leaves 1/1 and 22/8.

Annotations: Occasional marginal annotations in a 16th-century hand, some so heavily washed out as to be illegible.  18th-century inventory or catalogue number ‘No 386’ on front free endpaper (the same hand has written ‘No 629’ in Marcus Tullius Cicero, Orationes. Venice: Christophorus Valdarfer, [not after 9 Nov.] 1471 (Bf.3.19, C55) and ‘No 165’ in Paulus de Sancta Maria, Scrutinium scripturarum. Mainz: Peter Schoeffer, 7 Jan. 1478 (Be.3.22, P8/2));  initials ‘P G’ in an 18th-century hand and a price '550 ll’ on rear free endpaper.
Decoration: On 2/1r (f. 13r) a six-line initial “M” is supplied in gold on a background of white-vine decoration defined in crimson, blue and green which extends into the margins to form three borders edged in gold;  the white-vine decoration of the lower margin of the same page incorporates an unfilled green laurel wreath edged in gold, and distinct impressions of its gold edging and the gold edging of the borders are visible in the blank borders of 2/2-2/6 (ff. 14-18);  other initials throughout supplied in alternate red and blue;  paragraph marks supplied in alternate red and blue in quire 1 (containing the rubrics and errata);  paragraph marks supplied in red at the beginning of each chapter together with partial underlining in red of chapter headings. 
Imperfections: Wanting the blank leaves 1/1 and 22/8.
