Provenance: Gilbert Skene (1522?-1599), Professor of Medicine, King’s College, Aberdeen, and physician to James VI of Scotland - possible owner:  inscription “Skeneus Medicus” written on the title-page of another incunable edition of the Regimen sanitatis of Magninus ([Paris:]  Félix Baligault, for Claude Jaumar & Thomas Julian, [ca. June 1500] i.e. ISTC im00055000), which has been mounted on a blank sheet of paper and inserted before leaf a1 (the insertion of this sheet post dates the marginal wormhole present in the first half of the book);  for an identical provenance see National Library of Medicine, Bethesda, MS 29, which is a late 15th-century manuscript of the Regimen sanitatis of Magninus (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/nlmcatalog/100899922).

Binding: England, 18th-century mottled calf;  covers decorated with a gold-tooled border;  gold-tooled spine;  gilt-edged leaves;  dark blue pastedowns;  front and rear flyleaves show a partial Vryheyt lion watermark with motto “Pro Patria Eiusque Libertate” within an oval border surmounted by a crown.   Size:  214 x 145 mm.
Leaf size: 208 x 137 mm.
Annotations: Recipes for poultices and ointments written in a 15th/16th-century hand on a1r;  the same hand has added brief marginal annotations on b7v and b8r;  letter “C” in ink in an 18th-century hand on first front flyleaf;  the number “651” in ink in an 18th-century hand on a2r;  the number “376” in pencil in an 18th-century hand on a1r.
Decoration: Four-line initial “I” on a2r supplied in red, blue and reserved white;  other initials and paragraph marks supplied throughout in red or blue;  capitals washed in faded yellow.
