| Provenance: | Unidentified owner (16th century): on 34/11v (f. 304v) is a heavily deleted five-word inscription followed by the date “1576 17 feb”; a similarly deleted inscription with the date “17 feb” appears on 1/1r. Louis Jean Gaignat (1697-1768), Secretary to King Louis XV: Gaignat sale, 1769; lot 684 in Guillaume de Bure, Bibliographie instructive: supplément ... ou catalogue des livres de feu M. L.J. Gaignat, 2 vols (Paris: 1769). | Annotations: | Profusely annotated in two 15th/16th-century hands; two leaves of a manuscript index written in a 16th-century hand (crudely ruled in red ink and with initials in red and blue) are bound-in at the end - the paper bearing watermarks of a tower (cf. Briquet 15899) and of a star-shape suspended from a crescent (cf. Briquet 5225-5228); occasional evidence of early numbering in arabic numerals in extreme top right-hand corner of first recto of each quire. |
| Decoration: | On 1/1r, at the beginning of the gloss to book I, a 32-line initial “I” is supplied in red and blue with reserved white and is embellished with pen-work decoration in purple, and on the same page four small initials are supplied with similar pen-work decoration; initials with pen-work decoration are also supplied on the opening pages of books II-V of the Decretals; other initials and paragraph marks throughout are supplied in alternate red and blue; running book numbers “I”-“V” and chapter headings are supplied in red with underlining in blue. |
