Provenance:	N.T.:  in the lower margin of a2r within a green laurel wreath is a painted armorial shield:  party per fess gules and or, in chief a cross molise or above a six-pointed mullet or, in base a bendy of six;  the shield is placed on a background of dark blue and is flanked by the initials ‘N T’ in gold, and the laurel wreath is supported by two red-tongued dragons whose coiled tails are held by two putti. Joseph Smith (1673/4?-1770), British Consul in Venice:  engraved armorial bookplate (Franks 27324) on front pastedown;  lot 1150 in Bibliotheca Smithiana:  a catalogue of the curious, elegant, and very valuable library of Joseph Smith (London:  1773). William Hunter (1718-1783), physician and anatomist:  purchased by Hunter at the Smith sale for £3.5.0 according to the annotated British Library copy of the Smith sale catalogue - shelfmark S.C.S. 8(7). University of Glasgow:  Hunterian bequest 1807;  Hunterian Museum bookplate on front pastedown, with former shelfmark “Aj.1.8”.
Binding:	Italy, 18th-century parchment;  green leather title label on spine;  green silk bookmark;  free endpapers have watermark of the letters “V A S” above the letter “C” (or perhaps “G”).   Size:  333 x 233 mm.

Decoration:	Nine-line initial ‘I’ on a2r supplied in purple and green on a rectangular gold ground, with a floral border in the inner margin in blue, purple and gold embellished with brown hair-line scrolls;  in the centre margin is a column of overlapping leaves in green and purple (resembling the trunk of a palm tree) surmounted by a cameo bust of a man in profile;  in the lower margin is a painted coat of arms (see Provenance);  three smaller three-line initials on the same page supplied in purple and blue on a square gold ground.  Similarly decorated four- to seven-line initials supplied at the beginning of each book, often with foliate extensions into the margin;  other initials throughout supplied in alternate red and blue;  printed capitals used in the opening lines of each book (and some capitals in the Registro and Tabula) are stroked in yellow.   See N.R. Imperfections:	The third decade only (2a10 2b-q8 2r6 2[s]10), with its Registro and Tabula of ten leaves (2[s]10) bound at the beginning (ff. 301-310, 166-300 of the BMC description).
