Friedrich Schiller University Jena, Germany

Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena (Friedrich Schiller University Jena), founded in 1556, is among the ten oldest universities in Germany and is associated with 6 Nobel laureates. Notable former citizens and teachers include Schiller, Fichte, Hegel, Novalis and Schlegel. Jena was the birthplace of modern precision optics, with the likes of Carl Zeiss, Ernst Abbe and Otto Schott all working in the city and today it has a reputation as a city of science.

Jena is a city in the state of Thuringia, in the centre-east of Germany with a population of 110,000. While both WWII and GDR aesthetics remain, Jena is also one of the few medium-sized cities in Germany with high-rise towers. The surrounding landscape is shaped by rolling hills and the Saale river.
