Columbia University, USA

Priority partnership with Columbia University

Columbia University, a member of the prestigious US Ivy League, signed a memorandum of understanding with the University of Glasgow in 2010. This allows academics from both institutions to work closely, bringing together complementary world-class expertise and facilities, to develop high-impact research themes. The initial focus of collaboration was in biomedical research, but the activity is steadily expanding.

An important outcome of this high-level support is a funded Early Career Mobility Scheme. The purpose of this is to foster stronger links between research groups at the two universities, with the aim of developing joint publications and research grant funding. It has supported the development of a number of existing collaborations as well as the initiation of many new ones. Outcomes, which, of course, can take some years to develop, include contribution to at least 5 successful grants (total value £3.8m), access to international research facilities and numerous publications.

University of Glasgow staff wanting to visit Columbia to work on a collaboration can apply to the International Partnership Development Fund.
