University of Bologna, Italy

The University of Bologna has campuses in Bologna, Cesena, Forlì, and Ravenna. Founded in 1088, it is the oldest university in the world and therefore has a long history of academic success. Lots of famous names have attended the university through the ages, including Dante, Copernicus and even Erasmus of Rotterdam, who the Erasmus programme is named after. A bonus is that the university hired the first ever female lecturer in 1732!

The city of Bologna is described by many as a perfect student town, with picturesque views and a variety of bars and nightclubs. It is also home to one of the world’s largest churches (the Basilica di San Petronio) amongst many other landmarks.
