Centre for the Study of Socialist Theory and Movement
The Centre has its origins in the late seventies when students and staff were anxious to provide an outlet for research and teaching around areas of thought not easily provided for in the usual departmental structure. Since that period the Centre has had a regular throughputof research students and a varying number of M.Phil students. The Centre provides the opportunity for detailed study in the field of socialist theory, particularly in the traditions deriving from the work of Karl Marx, and in the history of the socialist movement of the 19th and 20th centuries. It offers supervision towards the Ph.D degrees.
Its Ph.D programme is currently A-rated by the Economic and Social Research Council.
Students who have studied for the degree of Ph.D in the past have written on Ricardo and Marx, Analytical Marxism, the political economy of finance capital, the nature of gold in relation to South Africa and other topics. The Centre has a regular seminar
series, where its members present papers on topics on which they are working. Debate, controversy and the development of conceptual tools are basic to the centre. The journal Critique, Journal of Socialist Theory is edited by members of the Centre.
