Synthetic Biology (SynBio) brings together biology and engineering to design and construct novel biological systems that do not exist in nature.
By applying a bottom-up approach — building new pathways and functions from fundamental biological parts — the Synthetic Biology research cluster aims to create synthetic systems with innovative applications across health, energy, and the environment.
Our researchers combine engineering principles with deep biological insight, much like early electronics pioneers did with circuits, to develop new technologies using living components.
We operate as part of a multidisciplinary community at the University of Glasgow, with strong ties to colleagues in the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences. This collaborative approach is central to pushing the boundaries of what biology can do.
