The Mechanics of Materials and Structures research cluster investigates the mechanical properties and behaviour of both engineering and natural materials.
Our research spans a wide range of fields, from materials science to structural engineering, with a strong focus on understanding how materials respond to stress, strain, and environmental conditions. Much of our activity is conducted within the Glasgow Computational Engineering Centre (GCEC), where we apply cutting-edge computational tools to simulate, analyse, and optimise material and structural performance.
Our work involves both fundamental research into the mechanical behaviour of materials and the practical application of these insights to real-world engineering problems. Key research areas include:
- Constitutive Modelling: Specialising in granular media, soil, and rock mechanics, with a particular focus on geotechnical applications.
- Hydraulics and Fluid Mechanics: Leading research into fluid-structure interactions, fluid dynamics, and hydraulic systems.
- Material Strength and Fatigue: Understanding the fatigue life and failure mechanisms of materials under various loading conditions.
Our researchers work closely with industry partners to apply these insights to the development of more efficient, sustainable, and resilient engineering solutions, from infrastructure and construction to energy systems and manufacturing.
