The University of Glasgow has a long-standing reputation in energy research, dating back to figures such as Lord Kelvin and James Watt. Today, our work focuses on improving the efficiency, sustainability and resilience of modern energy systems.

Our research addresses challenges across energy generation, storage, transport and use, supporting the transition to low-carbon technologies while recognising the ongoing role of conventional systems. We take a practical, interdisciplinary approach, working with industry partners and using advanced modelling, experimental tools and materials.

Current areas of focus include renewable energy, carbon capture and storage, sustainable manufacturing, life-cycle assessment and smart grids. We also explore technologies such as geothermal energy, hydrogen storage, and bioenergy. Thanks to a donation from Petroleum Experts Ltd., we use the IPM Suite and MOVE software—valued at over £5.4 million—for MSc student projects and research into carbon storage, geothermal energy and hydrogen systems.

Our goal is to support a more sustainable and responsible energy future through research that is both applied and collaborative.
