Radiotherapy is a key component of cancer therapy. It is an effective and often curative treatment across a broad range of cancer types and can be used alone or alongside other treatments such as surgery or chemotherapy.
Advanced imaging technologies enable precise delineation and safe, effective targeting of tumours and are integral to the radiotherapy process and its success. Not all patients benefit, however, and innovative approaches are needed to further improve cure rates. There is also a need for outcome prediction tools to better tailor treatments to the individual patients.
Our goal is to better understand radiation responses at the biological level and use this information to develop innovative approaches to advance radiotherapy and improve outcomes for patients.
Ongoing research aims include:
- Understanding the determinants of radiation responses on a (multi)cellular and molecular level, with particular focus on the DNA damage response and cell death, metabolic and mitochondrial pathways
- Understanding the impact of radiotherapy on cancer cell migration and invasion and the tumour microenvironment
- Using spatial molecular profiling to understand the role of cellular crosstalk in determining radiation responses
- Understanding the impact of health inequalities and associated factors on radiotherapy outcomes and biological responses to radiation
- Conducting longitudinal imaging and biomarker studies to characterise the impact of standard-of-care and novel radiotherapy treatments on tumour evolution
- Developing and optimising preclinical models and methodologies for radiation response studies
- Developing, optimising and testing novel (combination) treatments in the preclinical and clinical settings
- Developing strategies to reduce the long-term side-effects of radiotherapy
- Developing sensitive and robust radiation response prediction tools through integration of biospecimen, imaging, pathology and clinical data
- Developing innovative imaging technologies, including radiomic and radiogenomic approaches, for improved cancer detection, outcome prediction and treatment delivery
Wider impact of research:
More than half of cancer patients will receive radiotherapy as part of their treatment. Given its broad application and the powerful curative potential of radiotherapy, even small gains in efficacy, healthy tissue tolerance or outcome prediction are expected to have a large impact on overall cancer outcomes.
Our work aims to maximise tumour cure rates and minimise the toxicities associated with radiotherapy through rational application of innovative technologies in the fields of imaging, radiobiology, radiation delivery, cellular and molecular biology, biomarkers, genomics and spatial profiling. We aim to improve our understanding of radiation responses at the cellular, tissue and patient levels. These insights are required for development of pioneering technologies and novel combination treatments that enhance outcomes by improving tumour control rates while minimising damage to healthy tissues.
Our undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training and our collaborative research programmes benefit from a multidisciplinary environment comprising biologists, clinicians, data scientists, pathologists, radiologists, radiographers, medical physicists, patients and patient representatives. Embedded within the Cancer Research UK RadNet Centre of Excellence in Glasgow, we bridge the gap between laboratory and clinic with studies that span the full breath of discovery, translational and clinical research.
