At the forefront of innovation, the Biomaterials research cluster explores how smart materials can revolutionise biomedical science.
Our multidisciplinary team designs and engineers biomaterials that support and enhance healing, regeneration, and integration within the human body.
Biomaterials are foundational to a broad range of medical applications—from diagnostics and orthopaedic implants to cell therapies and regenerative medicine. Our research focuses on creating engineered microenvironments that can direct and influence cell behaviour, improve implant performance, and support tissue regeneration in conditions such as non-healing bone defects, osteoarthritis, myocardial infarction, and liver disease.
Our work not only deepens fundamental understanding of cell–material interactions in both healthy and diseased states—such as stem cell differentiation or cancer cell dynamics—but also seeks real-world impact. We aim to translate materials-based innovations into clinical trials and therapeutic solutions, in close collaboration with clinicians, industry leaders, and international academic partners.

Advanced materials
We engineer bioinspired materials through micro- and nanoscale control of surface chemistry, topography, and mechanics to create advanced platforms for cell engineering, tissue regeneration, and targeted delivery.
Cell engineering
We engineer biointerfaces with controlled extracellular matrix proteins and growth factors to direct cell function in both physiological and pathological conditions, focusing on stem cell differentiation, cancer cell behavior, and the dynamic nature of cell-material interactions.
Regenerative medicine
We focus on translating advanced materials from bench to bedside by developing three-dimensional devices with integrated mechanical, topographical, and chemical cues, addressing challenges in fabrication, up-scaling, and pre-clinical testing for applications like vascularization and bone regeneration.
