The Materials and Manufacturing research cluster, based in the James Watt School of Engineering, leads internationally in the design, synthesis and production of advanced materials, including polymer composites, lightweight alloys, and construction materials such as concrete.
Our work spans fundamental research and industrial applications, underpinned by a strong focus on sustainability—whether through lightweight design, recycling strategies or low-carbon manufacturing.
We specialise in Integrated Computational Materials Engineering, combining materials science and process modelling to understand and improve performance at multiple length scales.
The cluster includes a dedicated team of academic and research staff, and benefits from strong links with the Glasgow Computational Engineering Centre, alongside access to state-of-the-art facilities in 3D printing, mechanical testing, microscopy and material characterisation.
