Mechanical Engineering project work
Project work is a very important part of any engineering degree as it helps to prepare you for a graduate job in engineering. You will develop skills such as teamwork, problem solving and critical analysis and put what you have learned in the course modules to practical use. Many students find the project work of the degree the most rewarding and the most fun - you will be given the opportunity to both stretch and prove your knowledge on real-life problems.
Years 1 to 3
Although there are no standalone project courses in the first three years of either the BEng or MEng degrees, you will be required to work in groups as part of individual courses. Through collaboration on tutorial problems and via group work and presentations, you will be introduced to the fundamentals of best engineering practice for efficient group work, and develop these skills before embarking on larger projects in the later years of the degree.
Project M4 - BEng, Year 4
In this project you will be tasked with an engineering problem based on one of the areas of study that you will have shown a preference for in the preceding years. The work will incorporate different branches of the mechanical engineering knowledge you will have gained in the previous years. The project is designed to develop your ability to understand the field of investigation, to rationally select a suitable methodology and to apply it soundly in order to present your findings professionally, accurately and with correct understanding.
Integrated System Design Project 4 - MEng, Year 4
This project is undertaken in a group of mixed engineering backgrounds - you will be collaborating with your counterparts from Product Design Engineering (PDE),Mechanical Design Engineering (MDE) and Electronics and Electrical Engineering (EEE). You will work as team on a project which involves aspects of all the major disciplines of engineering, combined with broader considerations of project management, environmental issues, accountancy and quality management.
Industrial project M5 - MEng, Year 5
In this project you will be tasked with an engineering problem based on one of the areas of study that you will have shown a preference for in the preceding years. The work will incorporate different branches of the mechanical engineering knowledge you will have gained in the previous years - and you may have the opportunity to work in an industrial environment. The project is designed to develop your ability to understand the field of investigation, to develop a methodology and solution procedure in a professional and efficient manner - this will your largest academic undertaking to date, and you will be asked to demonstrate what you have completed at future job interviews.
