This course will examine enhanced learning through collections and programmes for a range of visitors/learners considering formal, non-formal and informed learning outcomes and demands. Students will apply their knowledge and skills to a practical setting.

This course will be delivered via lecture style inputs which will take place on a series of Saturdays in Kelvin Hall teaching suite.

Additionally, students will undertake a 2 week placement in a museum or heritage setting as arranged by the School of Education.

This course aims to provide participants with the opportunity to develop extensive, detailed and critical knowledge and understanding of how museums and object based learning can act as a stimulus for subject specific and interdisciplinary learning within local, notional and global contexts. The students will be provided with an opportunity to practice skills in 1 of a variety of professional level contexts, such as schools, museums, community art facilities in order to apply critical knowledge and understanding of how learning in and through the museum can contribute to effective learning, practical experience and employability skills.

By the end of this course students will be able to:

LO1 Critically identify, define and analyse how engaging with objects in the museum context supports and enhances learning in a progressive and coherent way for a range of stages (learning).

LO2 Apply critical analysis and evaluation to a range of pedagogies and models of learning in order to identify their value in relation to effective learning in and through the museum.

LO3 Critically analyse museum education practices at a local, national and global level to identify evidence of effective planning, organisation, implementation and evaluation.

LO4 Design and produce formal and informal learning plans to support original creative activities, linked to relevant curricula, that provide opportunities for exploration of in-reach and out-reach learning experiences associated with the museum.

LO5 Critically apply knowledge, understanding and specialised skills and techniques to encourage connections between museums and varied learning environment during practice placement.

LO6 Demonstrate how subject specific expertise e.g. education, curatorial, etc. might be used for successful collaboration with peers, other colleagues and learners in order to enhance the knowledge and understanding of all relevant stakeholders.

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
