Visiting Special Collections
**Service Announcement* Due to unusually warm conditions in our reading room, we may be unable to issue some items or items may take 24 hours to produce. Please, as far as possible, contact us in advance to ensure that the material you wish to see is available, especially if you are planning to travel. This measure is to protect the fragile items in our care.
Admission to Special Collections is free to all: visiting researchers as well as every member of the University are welcome to use the collections.
Although it is not necessary to make an appointment, it is best to get in touch in advance as it is not always possible for us to issue the item you may wish to see or to respond to in-depth enquiries immediately. We are happy to arrange appointments with an appropriate member of staff who will be able to advise you on our holdings. Visiting readers should obtain a temporary Visitor Ticket at the Library Welcome Desk, which is situated at the entrance of the library. You will need to fill out a short form and show some photographic ID.
Special Collections is situated on Level 12, reached by taking the lifts opposite the lending services desk on Level 2 (entry level).
*Most categories of books will be fetched for readers within 30 minutes of their placing a request, although occasionally short staffing regrettably results in fetching being reduced to an hourly basis only*.
*Please note that items from certain collections take longer to fetch, while photographic material and some oversize books require 24 hours notice before they can be fetched out. Such exceptions are noted on the collection descriptions or, in the case of individual large items, on the catalogue records*.
*Some items are restricted for preservation reasons and access will not be granted without prior permission from the Special Collections Senior Librarian (if an item is restricted, this will be indicated on the catalogue record)*.
All books/manuscripts must be handed back to the desk supervisor 15 minutes before closing time.

The department is WiFi enabled. Visitors from other participating institutions can access WiFi through Eduroam.
We have an ergonomic chair in the reading room. Visitors who would like to use it during their research can e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org to reserve the chair for the duration of their stay.
Please note that, due to the nature of the material housed here, the Reading Room is a temperature-controlled environment and therefore, may feel quite cool if studying for a prolonged period of time. It is advised to wear/bring a jumper, cardigan, or other warm, indoor garment. *We are currently (August 2018) experiencing unusually warm temperatures in our reading room*
