Postgraduate degrees in Popular Music Studies were introduced at Glasgow in September 2007, with the redesigned MLitt in The Music Industries commencing in September 2016. This programme is suitable for graduates from a range of disciplines and subject areas including Popular Music, Music, Sociology, Business Studies, Politics, History etc. Candidates do not have to be musicians to apply. The degree has been developed to allow for a range of specialisms and exit routes.
The MLitt in The Music Industries is located in one of the UK's most important cites for popular music. In recent years Glasgow has produced acts such as Chvrches, Snow Patrol, Franz Ferdinand, Belle and Sebastian and former Glasgow student Emeli Sande. This has built on a longer tradition of acts such as the Delgados, Mogwai, Orange Juice, the Teenage Fan Club, Deacon Blue, the Sensational Alex Harvey Band to name but a few.
The City also boasts a number of important venues including the Barrowland Ballroom, King Tuts Wah Wah Hut, Stereo, The O2 Academy, the O2 ABC, Oran Mor, and the Hyrdo. Important Glasgow labels include Chemikal Underground, Soma and Rock Action. The city is home to a vibrant and exciting music scene.
Many of those active within that scene have expressed support for the programme and a number are involved in various ways including offering placement opportunities.
