Short Description

This course provides students with an in-depth understanding of how drugs work, their interaction with the body in health and disease, how drugs are used in clinical practice and the appropriate therapeutic use of cardiovascular drugs in common clinical situations.

Course Aims

This course aims to provide students with the opportunity to learn about the use of drugs in clinical situations, develop a deeper understanding of how drugs work and to learn about use of drugs used in cardiovascular and associated diseases, including diabetes.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

 

1. Identify and discuss different types of adverse drug reaction

2. Apply basic principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics to special disease groups (such as liver and renal disease)

3. Appraise the importance of adherence to drug regimens and outline how this may be improved

4. Critically discuss the pharmacology of drugs used to treat hypertension, thrombosis, angina, dyslipidaemia and diabetes

5. Critically appraise the use of drugs to treat hypertension, thrombosis, angina, dyslipidaemia and diabetes using national guidelines and clinical trial evidence

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
