Short Description

This course enables students to develop a broad, understanding of current and future international health challenges and the factors that will influence the development and responses to these. Students will develop the ability to analyse key issues, comparing and evaluating strategies and approaches in different national contexts.

Timetable

3 full days with online activity or 6 half day sessions of three hours supported by the use of the virtual learning environment (Moodle).

Assessment

Students submit a 2,500 word critical review of the literature (80%) and a verbal presentation of an overview of the work (20%).

Course Aims

To provide students with a global understanding of health trends and their determinants.

To explore the challenges in health care delivery within the context of political, social, cultural and economic influences.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Critically discuss international health trends with consideration of geographical, political, social, cultural and financial influences.

■ Critically appraise a range of national and international policies on the prevention and management of current and emerging health issues and on reducing the burden of ill-health.

■ Critically evaluate evidence on international health, including indicators of health and wellbeing.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
