Short Description

This course will examine the materials and meaning of dress within the social context of sixteenth-century Europe. It will examine the place of cloth and clothing within Renaissance ideals and culture.

1 hour lecture per week x 8 weeks

1 hour seminar per week x 8 weeks

2 x 2hr study visits to a museum or gallery

1 x essay of 4,000 words (80%)

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ Develop students' knowledge of Renaissance society through studying the materials, use, and dissemination of textiles and clothing.

■ Foster a multidisciplinary approach to Renaissance studies and to dress and textile histories

■ Train students in the reading and interpretation of multiple source types including portraiture, inventories and household accounts, and contemporary treatises

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Engage in a critical manner with the relevant secondary literature and apply interdisciplinary skills and ideas to the specific study of Renaissance society through clothing and textiles

■ Analyse the diversity of influences on the use and interpretation of cloth and clothing in Renaissance culture

■ Identify and assess the primary visual and written evidence that can be used to study cloth and clothing in Renaissance Europe

■ Present this knowledge in oral and written form according to established scholarly conventions, arriving at independent, well-argued conclusions

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
