Colin is a non executive board member of Public Health Scotland, Scotland's national public health body and is currently vice chair of its Population Health and Clinical Governance Committee. He founded SVM Asset Management, a UK fund management group with UK and international institutional and retail clients. SVM was acquired in 2022 by London-listed Assetco plc, now River Global.

Colin is a past vice chair of CFA Institute, the global body for investment professionals which publishes the Financial Analysts Journal. He is a former chair of CFA UK. He is executive director of Barnton Capital Holdings, an investment company with interests in US, UK and European private equity. Colin guest lectures at UK universities on behavioural economics and investment, and has served as an Honorary Professor at two Scottish universities. He writes OpEds and columns for The Herald, and co-authored readings for the CFA Institute examinations on Behavioural Finance and Professionalism.

Colin is a graduate of the University of Glasgow in Economics and Statistics, and also an MBA. He is a Chartered Actuary and a Fellow of CFA UK.
