Technical information about this website’s accessibility
The University of Glasgow is committed to making the Centre for Teaching Excellence Moodle platform accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.
Compliance status
The Moodle core website has been tested by MoodleHQ against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standard where this relates to the functionality provided by the core Moodle platform. Further information about core Moodle’s accessibility conformance can be found at:
Non-accessible content
The content listed below is or could be non-accessible for the following reasons.
Issues with text
- Some links may not make sense when read in isolation (e.g., “click here”), failing WCAG 2.4.4. We encourage content owners on CfTE to design links and navigation so that link purpose is clear when read in isolation, avoiding non-descriptive phrases such as “click here” or “read more”. Links should be presented as clearly labelled actions, for example, through cards or buttons with text such as “View related events” or “Go to the hub page”, which clearly describe the destination or outcome. We will continue to monitor the usage of links and ensure latest content meets standards.
- Custom styling applied by content authors may occasionally result in contrast issues (WCAG 1.4.3), which CfTE mitigates through standardised templates and content guidance
- Headings may not be provided or labels may not always describe topics meaningfully (WCAG 2.4.6)
- Language of uploaded documents may not be present (WCAG 3.1.1)
- Page titles of uploaded documents may not be present (WCAG 2.4.2)
Issues with images, video and audio
CfTE is establishing its platform with accessibility standards in mind and does not carry a large body of historical content published before 2019.
- Pre-recorded videos published on the platform are expected to include captions or transcripts. Where auto-generated transcripts are used, these may require review to ensure accuracy (WCAG 1.2.2), and improvements will be made where necessary.
- Images used in CfTE content are expected to include appropriate alternative text where the image conveys information. Decorative images are marked accordingly and do not require alternative text (WCAG 1.1.1).
- Live video CfTE does not deliver live video streams through the Moodle platform. Live sessions are delivered using Microsoft Teams and, where recordings are published on Moodle for later access, captions or transcripts are expected to be provided as part of CfTE content standards
Navigation and access
The CfTE Moodle platform uses the Synergy Spark theme, which is designed to support accessible and consistent navigation across the platform. Spark provides a structured layout, predictable navigation patterns, and consistent placement of key interface elements, helping users orient themselves within and between courses.
While the platform and theme support accessible navigation, some variation may occur where content authors make custom content decisions
- Headings and labels may not always describe topics meaningfully (WCAG 2.4.6)
- Navigation may vary across courses (WCAG 3.2.3)
Accessibility information relating specifically to the Spark theme is published and maintained by Synergy Learning and can be provided on request.
What we are doing to improve accessibility
The University of Glasgow’s CfTE Moodle will have an annual upgrade cycle. With each upgrade we will continue to assess existing features, integrations and interfaces based on the WCAG 2.2 success criterion.
We will continue to engage with Moodle (and any other third party vendors whose products are integrated with Moodle) and make them aware of any accessibility issues we find.
Actively explore new technologies and systems to assist in meeting the requirements
