International collaboration and the importance of global connectivity are at the core of the Global Glasgow International Strategy 2025

We are delighted to welcome visitors from all corners of the globe and welcome conversations with international partners in education, industry, commerce and government.

All incoming international visitors are required to use our online form to request a visit. This will help the International Relations team understand your needs and ensures that all requests are given the same level of support to deliver a successful and meaningful visit.

In April, we welcomed the EU Ambassador to the UK, Pedro Serrano, to our campus to discuss Glasgow's successes in securing Horizon Europe funding, our extensive engagement with European partners, and how much we value our large staff community of EU nationals.

Visit by Guild Deans of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities

We were delighted to host a meeting of the Guild Deans of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities.

The group of representatives from across the Guild membership met in our Advanced Research Centre over two days to discuss the societal impact of social sciences, arts and humanities research.

CIVIS 'Student Led Project' event

In March 2024, we hosted a week-long seminar and workshop series, welcoming faculty and students from European CIVIS partner universities. The objective was for staff and students to produce recommendations with a view of creating a pan-European framework for student led projects.

The event was one of the few projects selected for the Scottish Education Exchange Programme, created as a new instrument for international collaboration. To end the week, the City of Glasgow hosted a civic reception at the City Chambers, attended by the Scottish Minister for Higher and Further Education, Graeme Dey.

In March 2024, we welcomed colleagues from Kyushu University to our campus. The visit presented opportunities to discuss collaboration across multiple disciplinary areas including education, public health and student exchanges, as well as exploring COIL activities.

Longstanding relationship with McGill
 

In February 2024, we hosted Professor Anya Geitmann, McGill University’s Vice-President, Global Engagement, on our campus in Glasgow.

The relationship between Glasgow and McGill is a longstanding one and it was a welcome opportunity for senior University of Glasgow staff to engage with Prof Geitmann and discuss the future of our valued partnership.

MoU with City University of Hong Kong

In December 2023, we welcomed President Freddy Boey and a delegation of senior staff from City University of Hong Kong to our campus in December 2023 to renew a Memorandum of Understanding.

This visit presented the opportunity to discuss collaboration in many disciplinary areas, including veterinary medicine and biomedical engineering. The delegation met with our Principal, our Deputy Vice-Chancellor, the Dean for Global Engagement for East Asia, and representatives from the Colleges of MVLS and CoSE.

First meeting of CIVIS Research Council

In November 2023, the official inauguration of the CIVIS Research Council took place in Brussels. Professor Chris Pearce led the new initiative which brought together many Vice Rectors for Research from our CIVIS partners in Europe.

The meeting took forward many ideas on strengthening the research connections between our institutions and enhancing opportunities for skill development and collaboration for our research community.

Going Global

In November 2023, we welcomed international delegates from higher education institutes and government ministries from all over the world to our campus as part of the British Council’s Going Global conference.

We were honoured to host such an esteemed group in our Advanced Research Centre and share details of some of our world changing research initiatives.

Engagement with Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur 

In November 2023, we were delighted to be joined by Professor Sandeep Verma to sign a new MoU with IIT Kanpur. The partnership will connect our Medical School with Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology at IIT Kanpur (GSMST ITT Kanpur). 

This builds upon our existing collaboration between IIT Kanpur and researchers in the ARC, working in the complimentary fields of Chemical Biology and Translational Pharmacology.

European engagement

In October 2023, the University of Glasgow welcomed ambassadors Hélène Duchêne, French Ambassador to the United Kingdom and Miguel Berger, German Ambassador to the United Kingdom. 

We also hosted colleagues from our CIVIS partner, Autónoma de Madrid. Meetings discussed Horizon EU, as well as opportunities to strengthen learning and teaching collaboration, innovation and mobilities.

In September 2023, we were delighted to host the CIVIS steering committee at the University of Glasgow.

All ten CIVIS partners met to discuss future strategy, including the allocation of the funding for the flagship education projects of the CIVIS alliance.  

 

Visit criteria

Our International Relations team are ready to facilitate and coordinate international partnership visits and events. We welcome and will support visits that

  • Support the delivery of our Global Glasgow 2025 strategy and the objectives within it.
  • Focus on fostering institutional partnerships, especially those seeking to establish or enhance collaborations such as student international experience, joint research or joint delivery of teaching.
  • Involve high-ranking representatives, including but not limited to, senior university leadership, ministries, educational providers, industry or government officials.

These visits are usually university-wide or specifically seek meetings with senior leadership or Deans of Global Engagement.

We will do our best to accommodate all visit requests; however, there are instances when we may not be able to fulfill every requirement.

Please note that certain staff members may have prior commitments, affecting their availability. Additionally, visits cannot be arranged during University of Glasgow holidays.
