Diagnostic imaging

Diagnostic imaging

Diagnostic imaging is a vital part in the investigation of many medical conditions.  The Small Animal Hospital offers the largest and most comprehensive range of imaging modalities in Scotland and supports the other services within the hospital. The on-site facilities include:

  • Two x-ray units with computed radiographic facilities
  • 1.5T MRI unit
  • Helical CT scanner
  • General and cardiac ultrasound machines
  • Fluoroscopy unit for dynamic and interventional procedures

We also provide an out-patient general ultrasound service and a radiology reporting service.

External Referral Service

The Diagnostic Imaging service at the Small Animal Hospital offers a referral service for elective abdominal ultrasound.

Ultrasound Referrals

This service is offered for elective cases requiring abdominal ultrasound, with routine appointments at 0930 Monday to Friday. Requests for appointments should be emailed or faxed to the Small Animal Hospital. Cases will be discussed with a member of the imaging team prior to confirmation of the appointment. Sedation and/or intervention is not performed under this external referral service, and cases requiring sedation should be referred via the appropriate main referral service.

Note this service is for elective cases only - cases requiring urgent/emergency imaging should be referred to the appropriate primary service as a full referral. If there are any queries regarding possible referral of a case for imaging, please contact the imaging team at imaging@vet.gla.ac.uk or through the Small Animal Hospital 0141 330 5848.
