At the School of Mathematics and Statistics, you have opportunities to engage with a broad curriculum that spans theoretical and applied mathematics, statistics, and data science.

With options for hands-on work placements and study abroad programmes, you'll gain practical experience and global perspectives.

Our graduates are highly equipped for careers in research, industry, and beyond, equipped with the analytical skills that employers value.

Join a thriving academic community

Our school is a welcoming academic community, where students can connect, share ideas, and engage with both their peers and teaching staff throughout their studies.

  • World Class Research
We have a broad research portfolio spanning applied and pure mathematics, alongside statistics ranging from core methodology to modern areas in machine learning and AI. In REF2021, 100 percent of our research was rated world leading or internationally excellent, placing us 1st in Scotland and 5th in the UK in the Times Higher Education analysis.
  • Modern Facilities
Students benefit from dedicated computer labs, flexible study spaces, and supportive environments for both undergraduate and postgraduate work, including hands on lab teaching, shared offices for postgraduate research students, and a range of study areas across the wider university.
  • Personalised Support
Students learn in small groups and have regular access to lecturers, advisers, and one to one academic support. All students have an Advisor of Studies to guide them through their degree and offer academic advice, and our dedicated Student Support Officer is available to help with wellbeing and practical matters.
  • Maths & Stats Hub
The Hub is a drop-in help room and study space for all pre honours students. Level 1 and Level 2 lecturers hold office hours here alongside postgraduate tutors, providing plenty of support without the need for appointments. It is also a friendly space to meet others on the same courses and to build informal study and friendship groups.
  • MacLaurin Society (MacSoc)
Our long running student Mathematics and Statistics society hosts a mix of social events and academic activities, from quizzes and themed socials to employer talks and lectures. It’s a friendly way to meet others with similar interests, and membership is open to all students.
