School of Education

The School of Education, within the College of Social Sciences, has deep roots within the educational traditions of the University of Glasgow and the surrounding environment of Scottish Higher Education.  These roots include the heritage of Scottish teacher education, of adult and lifelong learning and of renowned centres for research into educational policy and practice such as the Scottish Centre for Research in Education (SCRE).

In keeping with the identity and ambition of a major international and research-led University, the School of Education has maintained and renewed these indigenous traditions by developing a wealth of fresh opportunities for those who wish to study with scholars of international reputation across a diverse spectrum of educational thought and practice.  Among the key strengths of the School of Education are

Our extensive and continually evolving postgraduate programmes include an innovative on-line doctorate in education as well as Masters degrees, including professionally focused qualifications in Educational Practice, and a number of named pathways in Adult Education, Support for Learning, English Language Teaching and Religion and Education.  The School also supports a wide variety of part-time and full-time PhD students. A particular strength of the School is educational leadership, where we offer a number of programmes including our ground-breaking suite of Masters degrees.  Complementing this is a programme designed particularly for those who wish to become leaders in religiously denominated schools.  We also offer a Masters in Educational Research.

As a research-led School of Education we are constantly re-shaping and developing our teacher education programmes, which include the MEduc with Primary Teaching Qualification; Post Graduate Taught Education Secondary; Post Graduate Taught Education Primary; MDTechEd Design & Technological Education. An important responsibility of the School is the preparation of teachers for service in Catholic schools and this is reflected in key components of several of the initial teacher education programmes.

The work of the School is organised around four Research and Teaching Groups (RTGs):

It is also advanced through a number of important research and development centres (Robert Owen Centre for Educational Change; CRADALL; the PASCAL International Observatory; St Andrews Foundation)
