Cardiac interventions: Pacemaker implantation
Some animals develop bradycardias that can cause symptoms such as weakness, exercise intolerance, and fainting episodes (syncopes). These animals undergo complete investigations: clinical, echocardiographic, electrocardiographic, blood analysis and abdominal/chest imagining are performed to rule out the presence of other causes which results this type of slow heartbeat. In some cases, it is not possible to treat them purely medically and a pacemaker must be used. This can be implanted in dogs transvenously and can thus offer support to the animal's cardiac activity in case of diseases like sick sinus syndrome high-grade second degree atrioventricular blocks, third degree atrioventricular block.
Teaching
Our service has an important focus on education: not only for our dedicated students, but many others. Veterinarians following a residency programme requiring a rotation in cardiology have the opportunity to be supervised directly by a diplomate, allowing them to learn the basics in cardiology, examining different clinical cases, dealing with different types of ECGs and discussing multiple echocardiographic findings.
Puppy Murmur Clinic
Does your puppy have a heart murmur? Our specialist led European & RCVS-certified cardiology team at the Small Animal Hospital of the University of Glasgow is offering a dedicated cardiac clinic for puppies!
Clinic Details
- Comprehensive consultation including echocardiographic assessment under supervision of a specialist cardiologist at a reduced fee
- Total cost: £270 (incl. VAT)
- Open exclusively for puppies below 12 months in whom a murmur is suspected.

Frane Ivasovic Dr. med. vet. DIPECVIM-CA
European Recognised Specialist in Small Animal Cardiology and RCVS Recognised Specialist in Veterinary Cardiology
Frane studied in the University of Zuerich and joined the Glasgow University in 2023 and is since then the small animal cardiologist of the hospital.
He is working on different topics of cardiac disease and is mostly involved into clinical work and teaching.
Frane is a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and European Recognised Specialist in Small Animal Cardiology.

Gemma Padrosa Sala
Resident in Small Animal Cardiology
Gemma graduated from the University of Murcia in 2020, where she developed her interest in cardiology. She then completed a rotating internship and spent a couple of years working in small animal practice in Spain.
In 2023, Gemma joined the University of Glasgow Small Animal Hospital as a rotating intern. Since then, she has completed a specialised internship in Cardiology and has started her Master's degree and residency training programme in Small Animal Cardiology.
