Withdrawing and Readmission into Science

If you are a student in attendance on a Science degree at the University and thinking of withdrawing, please see the section below on Withdrawing from Science.

If you have previously been in attendance on a Science degree at the University and have now withdrawn, you may be eligible to apply for readmission to that degree.

This relates only to degrees offered by the following Schools

  1. School of Chemistry
  2. School of Computing Science
  3. School of Geographical & Earth Science
  4. School of Mathematics & Statistics
  5. School of Physics & Astronomy

Students who have previously been discontinued from their studies by a Science Progress Committee are not eligible for readmission via the College. They can however reapply via UCAS.

Duration of Studies

Please note that all degrees are subject to a maximum number of sessions and must be completed within this limit. The number of sessions is counted from the point of your first registration. This includes

  • Any non-registered sessions
  • Any sessions taken as an Interruption of Studies
  • Any repeat years

If readmission would mean that you exceed the maximum duration allowed for your degree, your application will not be successful.

Withdrawing from Science

Leaving your degree is a big decision. Before you take that step, remember that we have a range of policies and support services that can help you continue or pause your studies without formally withdrawing.

Please consider the following steps

  1. Adviser of Studies and Student Support Officer: If you are considering not contiuning on your degree at any point thought the session, your first port of call is your Adviser of Studies or Student Support Officer. Be open about what’s going on. Often, issues that feel overwhelming can be managed with the right adjustments or support. In this meeting you can explain what’s affecting your attendance, engagement or performance, explore possible adjustments, and identify student support services if needed. Don’t be afraid to ask for help early since it could gives you more options. If you think a planned break would help, you can also ask about taking an Interruption of Studies, agreeing a provisional return date and any conditions for coming back. This early action helps you stay in control and ensures you’re linked in with the right support before things become overwhelming. Please refer to the Interruption of Studies policy to understand the implications of taking such a break. If you don't know how to identify your Adviser of Studies or Student Support Officer, please email science-chief-adviser@glasgow.ac.uk.
  2. Formally Withdrawing: If, after exploring support options, you decide you no longer wish to continue your degree, you must formally withdraw rather than simply stop attending. This means following the official withdrawal process.  Be sure to check how withdrawal affects your tuition fees, funding and, if you’re an international student, your visa status. Keeping the process formal protects your academic record and makes it much easier to seek readmission (following the guidelines given on this page) in the future should your circumstances change.

Science Readmission Policy

This section details the normal considerations for readmission to undergraduate degrees.

Level 1 students who withdrew before the end of level 1

  • Students should consider reapplying via UCAS to begin their degree again.
  • The student will usually need to return at level 1

Level 2 students who withdrew before the end of level 2

  • The student must have met all level 1progression requirement on their current degree in order and therefore be in a position to be readmitted at level 2
  • The student will need to return at level 2

Level 3/4/5 students who withdrew after successfully completing level 2

  • The student must have met all progression requirement relevant to their degree (Designated Degree, BSc (hons), of MSci)

All requests for undergraduate readmission will be considered by the relevant School Senior Adviser.

Postgraduate taught students should contact science-chief-adviser@glasgow.ac.uk directly to enquire about readmission to their programme.

All request for postgraduate readmission will be considered by the relevant School Senior Adviser and/or MSc programme convener.

In all cases, students must be able to complete their degree within the maximum duration of studies relevant to their degree.

In all cases, students who withdrew because they experienced extenuating circumstances should provide relevant supporting evidence that they can return to their degree at the point of applying for readmission.

Students who withdrew not as the result of extenuating circumstances should include their reasons for withdrawal, details of how their circumstances have changed and any provisions made to allow them to continue with your studies successfully on return.
