Sir William Macewen (1848-1924)

Surgeon

University of Glasgow medical graduate. He was one of Lister's pupils who continued his work in antiseptics and carried out revolutionary work in the areas of bone, spinal chord and brain surgery. He was the first surgeon to successfully remove a lung.195

He had a formidable war record and founded the Princess Louise Hospital for Limbless Soldiers in Erskine.196
