Ian Donald (1910- 1987)

Obstetrician

A St Thomas Medical School graduate, Ian Donald took over the Regius Chair of Midwifery in 1954. He had seen radar used during the war and used these techniques as a basis to conduct his ground breaking research into developing non-invasive diagnostic ultrasound techniques for foetal examination in the newly built Queen Mother's Hospital. This technique was later extended to other organs and is an invaluable diagnostic tool in medicine today.207
