Get Involved in Adam Smith Tercentenary Week

Published: 18 May 2023

Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli delivers a message on the upcoming Adam Smith Tercentenary Week, 5-10 June 2023 at the University of Glasgow.

This June, the University of Glasgow is welcoming high profile speakers and guests for a week of commemorative events to mark Adam Smith’s birthday.

Tercentenary Week (5-10 June) is the focal point of our Adam Smith 300 events, taking place throughout 2023 to reflect on the life, works and legacy of one of our most famous alumni.

Why are we marking this anniversary?

Adam Smith began his studies at the University of Glasgow in 1737 at the age of 14 years old. He was also appointed as Rector of the University later on in his life.

We are using this special anniversary year to commemorate Adam Smith as a scholar, citizen and educator, and to bring him into conversations about the problems we are facing as a society today.

Adam Smith 300 is open to the entire University community, and there are many ways for you to enjoy this.

Tercentenary Week takes place during the time of what was believed to be Smith’s birthday, 5 June. Sign up to hear from speakers including Gita Gopinath (International Monetary Fund); Professor Sir Angus Deaton (Princeton University); and Professor Deirdre McCloskey (University of Illinois). There’s also the opportunity to discuss Smith with international scholars and practitioners at our Symposium and academic workshop sessions.
