Immigration Compliance

If you are a new student starting your studies in academic year 2020/21 (including if you are an EU/EEA/Swiss national starting your studies after 1 January 2021), please see here for information on Visa Registration.

Nationals of countries outside the European Economic Area or Switzerland require a visa or leave to remain to be in the UK. Universities are required by law to check that all their students have valid immigration permission for the UK. The Immigration Compliance Team is responsible for ensuring that this requirement is met.

Universities are also licenced to sponsor students to come to the UK to study under the Student Route. The University of Glasgow is a registered Student Sponsor with Sponsor Licence Number TRAW6PAA8.

In 2020, the UK Points-Based visa system has changed. Students who received their visa before October 2020 will have a Tier 4 visa, while students receiving their visa from October 2020 onwards will receive a Student Visa. For more information on the new system and applying for a visa, please see International Student Support's webpages.

The UK is in the process of leaving the European Union. From 1 January 2021, nationals of the EEA and Switzerland (except for Ireland) will require visas or immigration permission to enter the UK.
