Transfer into, within, and out of Science

This section details the transfer policy used for students who are currently registered on a

  1. BEng/MEng, Arts (MA), Social Sciences (MA SocSci), or Life Sciences (BSc) degree and would like to transfer into a Science (BSc, MSci) degree.
  2. Science (BSc, MSci) degree and would like to transfer to another Science (B.Sc, MSci) degree

The bottom of this page provides links for students currently registered on a Science (BSc, MSci) degree who would like to transfer to an Arts (MA), Social Sciences (MA SocSci), or Life Sciences (BSc) degree.

The policy detailed on this page follows the Student Transfer Policy

Science (BSc, MSci) Degrees

This policy refers to degrees that are offered within the College of Science and Engineering from the following Schools

  • School of Chemistry
  • School of Computing Science
  • School of Geographical & Earth Science
  • School of Mathematics & Statistics
  • School of Physics & Astronomy

Which covers the undergraduate degrees listed - BSc/MSci degree options.  Please note that not all degrees have an MSci option.

Transfer Policy

Typically, we will consider transfer requests at the end of Year 1 or at the end of Year 2.

At the end of Year 1

  1. Students need to meet minimum progression requirements on their current degree.
  2. Students need to meet current entry requirements for the degree they want to transfer to.
  3. There needs to be capacity within the new degree.

Assuming all three points are satisfied then either

  1. The student can request to transfer into Year 2 of the new degree only if they meet Year 1 subject requirements of the new degree. Please note that we usually require all Science students to have completed 80 credits worth of Science courses within Year 1.
  2. The student can request to transfer into Year 1 in order to meet Year 1 subject requirements of the new degree.

At the end of Year 2

  1. Students need to meet minimum progression requirements on their current degree.
  2. Students need to meet all Year 1 subject progression requirements, or equivalent, for the degree they want to transfer to.
  3. There needs to be capacity within the new degree.

Assuming all three points are satisfied then either

  1. The student can request to transfer into Year 3 of the new BSc (hons)/MSci degree only if
    • they meet Year 2 subject and progression requirements of the new degree, and
    • they satisfy section 15 of the Generic Undergraduate Regulations (Entry to an Honours or Integrated Master Degree Programme), and
    • they satisfy section 3.3 (for BSc (hons)) or section 3.4 (for MSci) of the Supplementary Regulations.
  2. The student can request to transfer into Year 2 of the new degree in order to meet Year 2 subject and progression requirements of the new degree and satisfy both generic and supplementary undergraduate regulations.

All requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis and therefore if you do not meet any of the above, please email science-chief-adviser@glasgow.ac.uk detailling your circumstances and which degree your would like to transfer to and at what level and we can offer more specific advice.

Before beginning your degree

It is not the intent to detail the transfer policy for students who are new to the University and would like to transfer into Science before they begin their degree.  We will where possible try to accommodate such requests but it is more likely that students will be advised to make the transfer request at the end of Year 1 as detailed above. Please refer to the Student Transfer Policy for more explicit advice.

We will usually only consider transfer requests

  1. In June after the results deadline for the April/May exams.
  2. In September after the results deadline for the Resit period.
