Computing Science

Computing Science is worth 60 credits at level 2, so students should take 80 credits of College of Arts subjects in Year 1 in order to avoid having to take extra credits in Year 2 to fulfil the requirements of the MA degree.

Economics

Students on an Economics plan should take 80 credits of Arts subjects in Year 1 to fulfil the requirements of their degree as in Year 2, they will have to take 60 credits of compulsory Economics courses (40 at level 2 + 20 at level 1).

English Literature & Scottish Literature

If you are considering taking English Literature or Scottish Literature to Single Honours in the future, at some point in Year 1 or in Year 2 you must also take 40 credits of English Language at Level 1. If you are intending to take English Language to Single Honours, you must either take English Literature Level 1 in Year 1 or Year 2, or Scottish Literature in Year 1. If you are taking both English Literature and Theatre Studies in Year 1 and you would like to continue with both subjects to Year 2, then we strongly recommend that you take English Language 1 in your first year, because there is a timetable clash between English Language 1 and Theatre Studies 2.

English Language & Linguistics

If you are considering taking English Language and Linguistics at Single Honours, then you must take 40 credits of level 1 English Literature or Scottish Literature in years 1 or 2.

Geography

Geography is worth 60 credits at level 2, so students should take 80 credits of College of Arts subjects in Year 1 in order to avoid having to take extra credits in Year 2 to fulfil the requirements of the MA degree.

School of Modern Cultures Languages

French, German, Spanish, and Italian are available at Beginners’ and Non-Beginners’ levels. Portuguese and Russian are only available as Beginners’ languages.

Languages not available at Honours’ level: Czech, Polish and Mandarin Chinese are only available as Beginners’ Languages. At present, these languages have no route to honours, and can be taken only at level 1 and 2.

Gaelic Language

Gaelic has three levels, Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced, and is taught through the subject area of Celtic and Gaelic. You can talk to the subject team if you are not sure which level you should take.

Mathematics

Mathematics is worth 60 credits at level 2, so students should take 80 credits of College of Arts subjects in Year 1 to avoid having to take extra credits in Year 2 to fulfil the requirements of the MA degree. The only course you can take to progress to year 2 in mathematics, and from there to honours is MATHS1017 – Mathematics 1. This is a 40-credit full-year course. In order to take this course, you must have a Higher Maths at A, Advanced Higher at B, an A level at A or an A Level in Further Maths at B or equivalent qualification.

Music

Please note that there is a choice of 4 lectures for Music. Each choice has two lectures with each lecture at different times on different days. Lectures are denoted as LC01, LC02, LC03, LC04.

Music courses for MA in Music:

Listening in Culture (semester 1) and Listening through Analysis (semester 2)

  • LC01 Wednesdays at 0900 and Mondays at 1300
  • LC02 Tuesdays at 1200 and Fridays at 1500
  • LC03 Mondays at 1300 and Fridays at 1500
  • LC04 Wednesdays at 0900 and Tuesdays at 1200

Philosophy

If the 1000 lecture is chosen, then Seminar is Thursday 0900 – 1100. If 1400 lecture chosen, then Seminar is Wednesday 1400 – 1600.

Psychology

Psychology is worth 60 credits at level 2, so students should take 80 credits of College of Arts subjects in Year 1 to avoid having to take extra credits in Year 2 so they can fulfil the requirements of the MA degree. To take this subject at Honours, you must have a standard 5 (or equivalent) in Mathematics.
