School of Culture & Creative Arts | College of Arts & Humanities | Thinking Culture
Date: Monday 20 April 2026
Time: 16:00 - 18:00
Venue: Hunterian Art Gallery
Category: Public lectures, Academic events
Speaker: Olga Smith + Andrew Patrizio

For this special event, Thinking Culture will host Dr Olga Smith (Newcastle University) and Professor Andrew Patrizio (Edinburgh University) for a launch of their new edited book Methods for Ecocritical Art History (Manchester University Press). Andrew and Olga will be joined by Professor Carl Lavery (Theatre Studies, University of Glasgow) and Professor Dominic Paterson (The Hunterian) to discuss the book and its intervention in one of the most important and exciting developments in current art history.

The panel will also discuss how art history students might think about collections and curating from ecocritical perspectives, connecting it to the Hunterian Art Gallery’s ongoing work.

This is the first book to provide a survey of ecocritical methods, showing what they can offer art historians. It also indicates what the interdisciplinary project of ecocriticism stands to gain from art historians, their methods and practices. The book assembles twenty-three essays written by international scholars that span a wide range of methodological approaches, including ecofeminism, planetary ecologies, material ecocriticism, ecopolitics, and indigenous ecopoetics.

Refreshments served.
