Jennifer Taylor (Postdoctoral Fellow, Centre for Book Cultures and Publishing, University of Reading; & PhD, Art and Intellectual History, Warburg Institute, University of London) discusses how Perrault's famous fairy tales are, indeed, devices without illustrations, and how their allegorical design helped shape female agency in Louis XIV France. Ingrid Hoepel, emblem scholar and artist, discusses "Flügel und Steine", her latest publication and work. This emblem book picks up the tri-partite 16th century emblem form to address contemporary themes of flight and expulsion, peace and war, hatred, love, discrimination, and gender issues, questioning the historical art form's significance in the current art scene and the impact of art on science and vice versa.
