“Women, life, liberty”: these are the words that fill the streets of every city across Iran. Sparked by the murder of Mahsa Zhina Amini in September 2022, protests continue across the country; a revolution led by women as they fight against a patriarchal, authoritarian, and fundamentalist regime. 

The cinematic output of Iranian women shows us how these filmmakers and artists have always been at the forefront of protests and debates for over four decades. 

Iranian filmmaker Mania Akbari often turns to her body to draw on the connection between the personal and the political, the past and the present. In her film, A Moon for my Father (2019), co-directed by her British sculptor partner Douglas White, the two take us on a visual and poetic journey. Made in 2019, Akbari’s recollection of her past in Iran aptly connects us to Iran’s current movement. 

This screening will be held on March 21st in celebration of the Persian New Year, Norooz, as well as in solidarity with the ongoing movement in Iran. The screening will be followed by a pre-recorded interview between Akbari and Zahra Khosrohahi.
