Another Houellebecq: through Nicloux’s lens

Michel Houellebecq’s screen presence is seen as bluring the line between Houellebecq-the-man and the loosely autobiographical narrators and characters in his novels. By offering Houellebecq the opportunity to feature as himself in two mockumentaries (L’Enlèvement de Michel Houellebecq and Thalasso), Guillaume Nicloux facilitates this reading of Houellebecq-the-actor, thereby serving the author’s savvy marketing strategy – arguably an over-simplified reading of this partnership. A more nuanced reading is possible, one that acknowledges the cross-fertilization at play in Nicloux’s films featuring Houellebecq.
