In the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences, our researchers play an integral role in continuing our heritage of excellence and achievement.

Our collaborative, interdisciplinary approach to medical, veterinary and life sciences means we can study processes at every level of their biological organization, from genes, to cells, organs, individuals, populations, and ecosystems.

Our high quality research is used across the UK and internationally to improve human and animal health, quality of life and the competitiveness of the UK economy.

Institute of Biodiversity, Animal Health and Comparative Medicine

We integrate expertise in animal biology and ecology with that in comparative and veterinary medicine. Unique in the UK, the range of our studies spans multiple biological levels: from research into molecules and cells, to research into individuals, human populations and ecosystems.

Given the threats posed by rapid environmental change and our increasing human population, there has never been a more pressing need for our holistic approach. We are driven by the need to create multidisciplinary teams to address national and global research challenges.

Always striving to understand the interdependence of animal and human populations, ecosystems and the environment, our research explores the consequences of this interdependence for disease pathogenesis and transmission, food security and the conservation of species and habitat, using the full range of approaches from empirical experiments to theoretical modelling.

Institute of Cancer Sciences

The Institute of Cancer Sciences is part of a national centre of excellence in the fight against cancer.

The Institute of Cancer Sciences delivers world class research that makes major contributions to the fight against cancer. We carry out a programme of science directed at understanding the molecular changes that cause cancer. We are working to translate scientific discoveries into new drugs or diagnostic and prognostic tools that benefit cancer patients, taking new therapies through preclinical and clinical trials.

The Institute of Cancer  Sciences is a major component of the Cancer Research UK West of Scotland Cancer Centre. The Institute is a partner with the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research (BICR), which together form the core of cancer research in Glasgow. Together, there are currently 38 research groups housed in magnificent new research buildings at the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research, the Paul O’Gorman Leukaemia Research Centre and the CRUK clinical trials unit (CTU).

The Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences is a vibrant institute conducting internationally recognised research in cardiovascular medicine and sciences. The institute is , built on well-funded research that integrates basic, translational and clinical science and is a rich environment for training the next generation of cardiovascular researchers.

Our clinical and basic science academics perform  cutting edge research using state-of-the art facilities in multiple sites including the British Heart Foundation Glasgow Cardiovascular Research Centre, West Medical and Davidson Buildings at Gilmorehill Campus and the sites in the Western Infirmary and Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

Our research excellence has been integrated into substantial, well-resourced thematic programmes (Vascular; Cardiac; Diabetes, Renal & Metabolic; Systems Medicine; Clinical Trials) that build on the strengths and expertise of  clinical and non-clinical principal investigators.

Institute of Health and Wellbeing

The Research Institute of Health and Wellbeing spans the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences, and the College of Social Sciences.

The Institute of Health and Wellbeing conducts world class, internationally excellent research and teaching to improve population health and wellbeing and reduce inequalities in health. We carry out robust and evidence-based research that will inform policies and practices.

Our priorities are to
• Monitor trends in health and wellbeing
• Improve our understanding of social and environmental determinants of health and wellbeing, and their interaction with biological determinants
• Develop, implement and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions, policies and practices to improve population health and wellbeing
• Participate in knowledge exchange to ensure policies and practices are evidence informed

Institute of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation

The Institute of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation is an internationally recognized centre of excellence conducting high quality basic, translational and clinical science in the disciplines of infection, immunology and inflammation.

Our scientists and clinicians work together to promote and develop research, drug discovery and ultimately improvements in patient care in this area of critical international importance. The Institute contains scientists and clinical investigators of global repute who possess the broad expertise necessary to achieve our aims. Thus our principal investigators include geneticists, molecular and cell biologists, biochemists, immunologists, bacteriologists, virologists, parasitologists, pathologists and clinical investigators.

To achieve this, our aims are ambitious.
• To understand the basic science of the immune system and how the immune system can in turn promote disease
• To understand the biology of parasites, viruses and bacteria and the interactions with their hosts.
• To develop therapies (drugs and vaccines) targeted on these processes
• To explore new treatments and strategies in clinical and translational medicine

Institute of Molecular, Cell and Systems Biology
