GAP wins the Widening Access Award at the Herald Higher Education Awards

The Glasgow Medical School Access Programme (GAP) was awarded the Widening Access Award at the 2019 Herald Higher Education Awards. GAP is a flagship programme, part of the Scottish Government's 'Widening Participation' directive, which aims to produce medical students who are better reflective of the wider society in which they will eventually work.

Childsmile awarded as a public health exemplar programme

The Scottish Government's Childsmile programme (commencing in 2006) was named by EU Health as best practice for oral health improvement in June 2019. Since Childsmile began, the percentage of decay-free 5 year olds in Scotland increased from 45% (2003) to 71% (2018). Congratulations to the Childsmile co-director Professor Lorna Macpherson, who provides advice for the development and implementation of similar initiatives to governments and agencies internationally.

Professor Bridget Johnston honoured as a Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing

A Florence Nightingale Foundation clinical professor and an internationally-renowned palliative care nurse, Professor Bridget Johnston was named as a Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing in May 2019. Professor Johnston was recognised for her outstanding research work in palliative and end of life care. Congratulations from all of the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing.

Medical student Eleanor Wilson campaigns for free provision of sanitary products

Eleanor was successful in passing a bill through the BMA's student conference and subsequently through their Annual Representatives Meeting calling for the free provision of sanitary products, and specifically, for provision of products within hospitals. In 2019, NHS England, Wales and Scotland announced they will be doing so thanks to Eleanor's bill.

Dr Iliodromiti has been awarded a prestigious MRC Skills development fellowship to research “Women's reproductive health and its relation to diabetes and cardiovascular health”. She will be using advanced analytical methodology in big datasets to study how reproductive indicators (i.e. age of menarche, age of menopause, pregnancy complications, contraceptive choices etc) are associated / can be predictive of CVD and diabetes.
